This book came to life during an in-depth risograph class taught by Panayiotis Terzis at the School of Visual Arts.
It is essentially a type specimen for a mysterious alien typeface made of 26 characters. Specific riso techniques help the characters stand out as they are showcased in a variety of contexts.
The typeface itself was designed from scratch, both as its own object of interest and as an excuse to justify designing a type specimen. It wasn’t consciously inspired by anything specific: instead it tries to look coherent and entirely novel.
A type specimen is an unusual graphic design artifact in which the content serves the form. It prompts the question of the intrinsic meaning of letterforms, and how they make us feel. Using an unreadable invented script takes this question one step further. I would like the readers to reflect on the feelings of familiarity and alterity in the context of reading.
All the texts featured in the book mean something, but only I know what. Try to break the code! -Publisher
