A woodblock print by Uranian Phalanstery founder Dorothea Baer. Typical of Baer’s style, this composition uses symmetry and organic shape to harness a nascent spiritualism through simplicity.
“Withal,” a word not used commonly today, is commonplace in older texts and specifically in the Bible, which frequently acted as source material for both Baer and her partner Richard O. Tyler. When added at the end of a clause, “withal” is an adverb used to communicate additive meaning either positively (“in addition”) or negatively (“nevertheless”). In titling this work A Feeling Withal, Baer may have been referencing her own feelings in creating the artwork, our feelings as viewers reacting to the artwork, or another affective situation entirely that inspired this composition.
Printed in an edition of 17, this print is no. 3. Signed and numbered in pencil, embossed with the Uranian Press seal, and printed on handmade paper.
Condition note: there are two ~1 in. long cuts in the paper, visible in the last image.
