This long-term project is an extension of the work Book (Photography), in which we removed everything that is not “photo-” related in the book. The Chinese version was a follow-up of the previous project, and a start-up of this one.
In this work, we want to collect Susan Sontag’s On Photography in various languages, and only keep the word “photography” in every version.
In every language, “photography” means different things. In most Latin-based languages, “photography” means “drawing with light”; in Chinese, “摄影” means “capturing the shadow”; in Korean and Japanese, “사진술” and “写真” mean “writing of the real”. Such distinguishes not only reveal the history of photography in each culture, but also a larger sense of how the philosophy of photography is defined in various ways. - The artists
