During December 2021, I lived in an apartment in Inwood, a neighborhood with a predominantly Dominican population, in the north of the island of Manhattan. After a long confinement due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic, public and social activities, were apparently, beginning to return to normal. However, at that time, New York City became the epicenter of the omicron variant, once again being plunged into the chaos of the pandemic.

The use of face masks was essential to access the subway, in the carriages, the atmosphere was tense and sometimes hostile. Self-absorbed passengers took refuge more than ever in their smartphones.

Normally, my tours began at the Dyckman St. station on the A line. As a regular user of this transportation, I gave myself the task of photographing those who caught my attention, either because of their clothing or their personality. Helped by a digital tablet, I made this visual log. —Emanuel García

Durante diciembre de 2021, habité un departamento en Inwood, un barrio de población predominantemente dominicana, al norte de la isla de Manhattan. Tras un largo confinamiento debido a la pandemia por el virus SARS-CoV-2, las actividades públicas y sociales, en apariencia, comenzaban a normalizarse. Sin embargo, en ese momento, la ciudad de Nueva York se convirtió en el epicentro de la variante ómicron, con lo que se vio inmersa nuevamente en la pandemia y en un relativo caos.

El uso de cubrebocas fue indispensable para acceder al metro. En los vagones, el ambiente era tenso y en ocasiones hostil. Los pasajeros ensimismados se refugiaban más que nunca en las pantallas de sus teléfonos inteligentes.

Por lo general, mis recorridos por la ciudad iniciaban en la estación Dyckman St. de la línea A. Como usuario habitual de este transporte, me di a la tarea de retratar a quienes llamaban mi atención, ya fuera por su indumentaria o por su personalidad.
