Featuring contributions from 42 of Singapore’s most exciting visual artists, designers, collectives and writers, Happy Hows!? is an art book offering a playful dive into the island’s evolving relationship with happiness—through the lens of Singapore’s “new” 5 C’s. It captures responses to one of Singapore’s most iconic phrases, reimagining happiness beyond the conventional material markers.

The story of Happy Hows!? began in January 2022 at Singapore Art Week with the exhibition Happy House at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. Visitors were invited to reflect on the elusive nature of happiness and filled out ‘departure cards,’ sharing their personal 5 C words for happiness. The responses varied wildly, from Curry to Car Sex. After receiving 1,802 entries, this data was meticulously cleaned, sorted, and visually reimagined by a curated list of local artists and collectives.

Happy Hows!? is a dynamic publication that pushes the boundaries of traditional print, inviting readers to touch, fold, tear, and even interact with its pages digitally. The publication is designed by Van Lim & Ween, and curated and initiated by Mama Magnet. -Publisher
